East Haven, Connecticut, in New Haven county, is 3 miles SE of New Haven, Connecticut and 68 miles NE of New York, New York. The town is in the New Haven- Meriden area. There are 28,189 residents in East Haven.
East Haven sits in south central Connecticut on the east bank of New Haven Harbor. The first church society organized in 1709 and the town’s incorporation dates to 1785. In 1881, New Haven purchased a western part of the town, thereby altering its borders.
Today, East Haven is a New Haven suburb covering about 13 square miles. The town has 3.5 miles of beachfront on Long Island Sound, including a town beach. Housing in East Haven includes spacious condominiums and apartments, traditional colonials, contemporaries and ranch styles.
East Haven History
East Haven was obtained on November 29, 1638, by Puritan settlers Theophilus Eaton and Reverend John Davenport. It was then called East Farms. Settlements were established here in 1639. The New Haven colony merged with the Connecticut Colony in 1655 and an ironwork mill was set up here. As this mill became successful, the area came to be known as Iron Works Village. In May of 1707, the name of the town was changed to East Haven and it was officially incorporated in 1785.
